About me

I’m Paul John, a software engineer focused on building solutions that connect and empower people.

My path into software

I began learning to code while studying Mechanical Engineering. In November 2022, I joined ALX’s year-long software engineering program.

I’m based in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. What draws me to software is the joy of creation: taking an idea and turning it into something people can use. My work has taken me into backend systems, software integration, and data infrastructure, including laboratory systems in Zanzibar.

Paul John is a software engineer. He began learning to code while studying mechanical engineering, then joined ALX’s year-long software engineering program in November 2022.

Today, he works with Ubunifu Solutions on ZanLIS, Zanzibar’s laboratory information system. His contributions connect laboratory and clinical software, bring instrument results into the system, and make laboratory data available for reporting. The work also takes him beyond the code, into conversations with health teams, deployment support, and user training.

Much of his work happens between systems: a test request from a clinic, a result from an instrument, or records that need to become a useful report. He cares about making those connections reliable, and understanding how they fit the people using them.

That practical curiosity carries into his own projects. LinkHub began with a familiar frustration: saving useful links, then struggling to find them again. He’s developing it into a way to organize and share resource guides.

Across his work, Paul keeps coming back to the same question: how can this software be more useful to the people who depend on it?

What I care about

I care about how the software fits the people using it, how reliably it works, and how it can keep improving.

At Ubunifu Solutions, I contribute to ZanLIS, Zanzibar’s national laboratory information system. Alongside connecting laboratory and clinical software, I work with health teams through conversations, deployment support, and user training.

The Software Engineer’s Notebook holds notes on things I encounter while building software, including decisions and lessons from my projects.

The ns series

The ns series is where I build software for my own needs and for anyone else facing the same problems.

LinkHub grew out of my difficulty organizing and finding saved links. I’m developing it into a way to organize resources and share them as guides. It’s still in development.

WorkLog began with wanting to remember the details of my work. I eventually retired the standalone prototype and added the notebook to this portfolio. I explain why I made that change in an entry there.

My resume brings together my experience, technical skills, and education. You can read it online or download a PDF.
